Samuel Uttley – 1888-1890

There is not much to tell about Samuel Uttley, the last of six children in Nathan's second family with his wife Mary Ann:

Birth

Reference #035-554 in 1888 of the Ontario Vital Statistics is the best record of the birth of this young Samuel. He was, of course, named after his uncle Samuel, Nathan's younger brother.

     Name: Samuel
     When: 2nd Oct 1888
     Where: Waterloo
     Sex: Male
     Father: Nathan Uttley,
                 Night Watchman, Waterloo
     Mother: Mary Birmingham
     Doctor: Dr. Bingham
  • Mary Ann was 43 years old when Samuel was born.

Death

In the Vital Statistics for 1890, Reference #016-126:

     Name: Samuel Uttley
     When Died: 11th June 1890
Profession: Son of Nathan Uttley, Waterloo
     Where: Waterloo
     Cause of death: Bronchitis

Samuel is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Waterloo, lot number 496 (plot 6 of 6) near his parents.

  • The cemetery lot of six plots was purchased by Nathan.
  • The grave marker is on the backside of the headstone of Nathan and Mary Ann, a common practice of the day.
  • We don't know if Nathan purchased the plot when Samuel died or if he already owned it. We do know that Henrietta Gordon a daughter from Nathan's first marriage was buried close by in 1887.
